Silhouette: Tell a Story

     Silhouette -

Due Date:

Three days

Project:
Using Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop, create an expressive composition featuring silhouettes that tell part of a story in an emotional or dramatic way.

Media:
Digital Photography, and ​Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop

Steps:
  1. Come up with an idea that is moody, dramatic, emotional, active, etc. Brainstorm and draw thumbnail sketches to develop your ideas.
  2. Take a series of good, sharp photos of action shots of your peers posing. The more active, the better 
  3. Using Illustrator or Photoshop, trace from one or more of the photos.
  4. Arrange your traced drawings to maximize visual and emotional impact and to tell your story clearly.
  5. Add layers, colors, textures, details, and effects as necessary. Experiment.

Parameters:
  • All parts must be entirely original -- You MUST take photos of you and your peers (using your iPad, camera, or digital camera) specifically for this project
  • If using Photoshop, document must be at least 8 x 10 inches and at least 300 pixels/inch.
  • Do not use text.

Tips:
  • Have ideas before you leave to take photographs.
  • Faces and figures in perfect profile will best convey as much information as possible. 
  • Take photos in front of simple backdrops with no detail. It will be easier to trace them.
  • The more active and emotional the pose, the better. Be dramatic. Use body language.
  • Take action photos outside on a sunny day or under bright light. Action photos will be crisper and more in focus.
  • Take many, many photos.

Project:
Using Adobe Illustrator, incorporate your logo design into a corporate identity that includes the following:
  • letterhead (stationary)
  • envelope
  • business card
  • product label
  • (other)

Objectives:

  • Apply the principles of good design
  • Communicate the “personality” of a company
  • Create a cohesive set of usable documents

Materials:
  • Adobe Illustrator

Grading Criteria:
  • Design (Visual Impact)
  • Technical Quality
  • Personal Investment

To Start:
  1. View and discuss professional business card and letterhead design
  2. Develop motifs; try out different arrangements
  3. Use the templates for the business card and the envelope.

Series of Squares (Final Project for Term 2 -- Due Midterm Exam Day)​

Grading Criteria / Checklist:

Each square is graded on overall strength of design AND how well it illustrates the specific art concept.

  • Positive and Negative Space (Hiding a Letter in a Square) (14%)
  • Pattern (14%)
  • Movement (14%) -- turn in graphicdesign folder
  • Symmetry (14%) -- turn in graphicdesign folder
  • Depth (14%) -- turn in graphicdesign folder
  • Rhythm (14%) -- turn in graphicdesign folder
  • Series (14%) -- (See directions below)
 
  • Format Series
    • In Illustrator:
      • Single artboard that includes all 6 designs
      • 6 designs are the same size and aligned
      • Same amount of whitespace between all designs
    • In Photoshop
      • Format: 300 ppi, 12 x 18 inches, RGB
 
  • Unify thru Gradients, Textures, Layer Styles, Effects (Illustrator and/or Photoshop)
 
  • Turn in 3 files to “Type Squares” folder in graphicdesign server
    • EPS (“squares yourlastname.eps”) -- all 6 designs same size & aligned
    • TIF (“squares yourlastname.tif”) -- 300 ppi, 12 inches high, RGB
    • JPG (“squares yourlastname.jpg”) -- 72 ppi, 12 inches high, RGB
 
  • Print, Mat, and Label
    • Print to Epson SureColor P600
    • Print on correct side of paper
    • Scale to Fit Media (Fit to Scale): 13 x 19” (Super B)
    • Print Quality: Photo -- Ultra Premium Photo Luster
